Peter Budetti is the Director of the Institute for Health Services Research and Policy Studies at Northwestern University, Chicago and Evanston. He is a Professor with joint tenure in the Department of Preventive Medicine and in the Kellogg Graduate School of Management, and also holds appointments as Professor in the School of Law and the Department of Pediatrics. He directs a university-wide Institute that reports to the Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies.

Between 1990 and the end of 1995, Dr. Budetti was the Director and Founder of the Center for Health Policy Research, The George Washington University, Washington, D.C. He held an endowed chair as the Harold and Jane Hirsh Professor of Health Care Law and Policy, serving as a full-time tenured faculty member in the Department of Health Services Management and Policy, School of Business and Public Management, with joint appointments in the School of Law and the School of Medicine and Health Sciences.

Dr. Budetti is and has been Principal Investigator on numerous extramural funded projects. He was a member of the core legislative drafting group for President Clinton's Health Security Act throughout 1993, and was on leave from GWU to serve as a member of the professional staff for health reform of the Senate Committee on Finance during 1994.

Between 1984 and 1990, Dr. Budetti served as Counsel to the Subcommittee on Health and the Environment in the United States House of Representatives. He was a professional staff member with primary responsibilities for legislation and policy concerning health insurance reform, regulation of medical devices by the Food and Drug Administration, health professions education, health services research, biomedical research and a number of other areas.

From 1975 through 1984 he was with the Institute for Health Policy Studies, School of Medicine, University of California, San Francisco, leaving as Associate Professor-in-Residence of Social Medicine in Pediatrics. His major positions included Assistant Director, Joint Medical Program of the University of California at Berkeley and San Francisco, 1982-84, and Director, Washington, D.C., office of the Institute for Health Policy Studies, 1978-1981.

Dr. Budetti is a Pediatrician and lawyer. His medical degree is from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, and his law degree is from the School of Law (Boalt Hall), University of California, Berkeley. His undergraduate degree was awarded magna cum laude from the University of Notre Dame. Dr. Budetti is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and was elected a Fellow of the Association for Health Services Research in 1997 and a member of the National Academy of Social Insurance in 1996. Dr. Budetti is licensed to practice medicine and a member of the Bar of the State of California.
